CareLuminate does not have nurse interviews for this hospital currently, but is estimating the Nurse Recommendation Score based on the strong relationship between patient feedback and nurse feedback.

How Does CareLuminate Estimate The Nurse Recommendation Score?

With over 1,000 nurses having participated with CareLuminate to date, we have found that the relationship between hospital patient recommendation ratings and nurse recommendation ratings is very strong (p<.001, R-squared = .42).

While the two ratings are often similar, the comments from nurses are extremely important because they show an important 'inside view' into strengths or concerns in a hospital. CareLuminate is working towards offering nurse insights into every hospital in the US.

Nurses Say it Straight

These comments are not from nurses at University Medical Center but are instead nurse comments from hospitals with a similar size and quality ratings for illustration of what feedback from nurses at a hospital of this size and quality might be.

Quality of care at the hospital is a 5/10; provider-dependent. Some are knowledgeable and provide great care, others, especially new grads, may not. Pandemic exposed weaknesses, need proper fixes.

Exceptional nurses, hardworking doctors and staff, top-notch care, multitude of resources, best possible treatment. Very fortunate.

Great care, chaotic unit, busy, but team works tirelessly to meet everyone's needs to the best of our ability.

ICU is strong, received award, ED is chaotic, biggest in the area, challenging to manage.

Exemplary care; competent nurses and doctors. I would choose St. Joseph for receiving care.

Excellent quality of care with skilled team, teamwork, collaboration, and adequate staff including residents, interns, and nursing students.

Trust the quality of care, well-rounded specialties, great team, concerns about high utilization of LVNs compared to RNs.

Choose nurse and doctor carefully, no concerns when transferring patients to ICU or MedSurg.

Great care, amazing nurses, great doctors, compassionate team - would recommend our hospital to someone I love.

Advise seeking care elsewhere due to doctor turnover. Recommend going to KU.

Summary of Hospital-Reported Data

The Centers for Medicare and Medicaid Services requires hospitals to collect and report on hospital quality and patient satisfaction data. While the data can be dated (collected 1 to 4 years ago) the insights are an important view into hospital safety and quality. We looked through all of this data, and here is our summary of what we found:

University Medical Center has received low overall patient satisfaction ratings and there have been concerns raised by patients regarding the care team's ability to promptly meet their needs. Additionally, patients have reported difficulties in finding a quiet environment to rest in the hospital. In terms of patient outcomes, the hospital's mortality rates are found to be average across all measured areas. However, the hospital experiences lengthy wait times in the emergency room, with patients waiting for more than 3 hours on average to be seen and treated. Furthermore, the hospital's performance in treating conditions such as heart failure has been subpar, resulting in a significant number of patients needing readmission. Lastly, the hospital has faced challenges in maintaining low infection rates, with rates being reported as high.
