CareLuminate does not have nurse interviews for this hospital currently, but is estimating the Nurse Recommendation Score based on the strong relationship between patient feedback and nurse feedback.

How Does CareLuminate Estimate The Nurse Recommendation Score?

With over 1,000 nurses having participated with CareLuminate to date, we have found that the relationship between hospital patient recommendation ratings and nurse recommendation ratings is very strong (p<.001, R-squared = .42).

While the two ratings are often similar, the comments from nurses are extremely important because they show an important 'inside view' into strengths or concerns in a hospital. CareLuminate is working towards offering nurse insights into every hospital in the US.

Nurses Say it Straight

These comments are not from nurses at Barnes Jewish Hospital but are instead nurse comments from hospitals with a similar size and quality ratings for illustration of what feedback from nurses at a hospital of this size and quality might be.

St. Joseph's is a good hospital despite some unfavorable experiences, with sometimes malfunctioning equipment causing upset amongst patients.

Not recommending hospital, ED unit lacking, insufficient patient care.

ICU is strong, received award, ED is chaotic, biggest in the area, challenging to manage.

Depends on what they're looking for. Strong CT, cardiothoracic program. AHA-certified with stroke treatments, but all done via telehealth. Uncomfortable with Stanford consultations. Not for pediatrics.

"I would prefer them to go to Dameron. Honestly, I would have them come because I would be there. There are nurses I would trust with my family."

Don't go to Dameron, policies and processes are not well put together, staff is unhappy, management doesn't pay attention to teams.

I would definitely recommend my friends and neighbors to come here for both elective and emergency care because we're pretty good.

"I'd be good in my ICU, but med-surg floors have high turnover rate. MedSurg nurses lack comprehensive care, history knowledge. Don't want family in towers due to safety."

Overall, the nurse feels the hospital has good quality of care, a strong sense of family, and knowledge of each other. However, some departments are stronger than others, with the ER currently being the weakest.

Lodi is a small, community hospital with personalized care and a well-rounded viewpoint, due to its diverse culture.

Summary of Hospital-Reported Data

The Centers for Medicare and Medicaid Services requires hospitals to collect and report on hospital quality and patient satisfaction data. While the data can be dated (collected 1 to 4 years ago) the insights are an important view into hospital safety and quality. We looked through all of this data, and here is our summary of what we found:

Barnes Jewish Hospital demonstrates high overall patient satisfaction according to CMS HCAHPS patient ratings. However, the hospital is known for having a long wait time in the emergency room, with patients waiting an average of over 3 hours to be seen and treated. Furthermore, the hospital could improve in treating conditions like heart failure and pneumonia, as patients often have to return for further treatment.
