CareLuminate does not have nurse interviews for this hospital currently, but is estimating the Nurse Recommendation Score based on the strong relationship between patient feedback and nurse feedback.

How Does CareLuminate Estimate The Nurse Recommendation Score?

With over 1,000 nurses having participated with CareLuminate to date, we have found that the relationship between hospital patient recommendation ratings and nurse recommendation ratings is very strong (p<.001, R-squared = .42).

While the two ratings are often similar, the comments from nurses are extremely important because they show an important 'inside view' into strengths or concerns in a hospital. CareLuminate is working towards offering nurse insights into every hospital in the US.

Nurses Say it Straight

These comments are not from nurses at Hilo Medical Center but are instead nurse comments from hospitals with a similar size and quality ratings for illustration of what feedback from nurses at a hospital of this size and quality might be.

Safe and compassionate hospital with great nurses and doctors; referred my family there. Patients love how they're treated.

Highly skilled staff and expertise in doctors make Portland Adventist a top choice for quality care.

Not a very nice hospital, but ER doctors are good. Nursing care can be inconsistent, working on improving.

Quality of nurses decreased, recommend St. Joseph's, staffing and management issues, struggles on medical-surgical floor, inefficient transfers for neuro patients.

Great learning hospital with supportive team and managers who listen to our concerns. No bad experiences except COVID.

Lodi is a small, community hospital with personalized care and a well-rounded viewpoint, due to its diverse culture.

Overall, the nurse does not recommend the ED due to issues and disagrees about referring loved ones because of the quality of care.

Quality of care good, limited specialties, ask about medical needs before recommending, proud of nurses and physicians.

Mostly comfortable, excel in cardiology, majority of hospitalists are excellent, lack expertise in certain specialties, ICU's care and knowledge level needs improvement, young nurses lack experience.

The nursing staff is incredible, but the lack of resources and physician availability would influence my opinion on Menorah.

Summary of Hospital-Reported Data

The Centers for Medicare and Medicaid Services requires hospitals to collect and report on hospital quality and patient satisfaction data. While the data can be dated (collected 1 to 4 years ago) the insights are an important view into hospital safety and quality. We looked through all of this data, and here is our summary of what we found:

Hilo Medical Center consistently receives high overall patient satisfaction scores, indicating a positive patient experience. However, patients have expressed concerns regarding the ability to have a quiet rest during their hospital stay. The hospital maintains an average emergency room wait time, with patients typically being seen and treated within 2-3 hours. Unfortunately, the hospital falls short in effectively treating conditions such as heart attacks and heart failure, resulting in higher readmission rates. On the other hand, Hilo Medical Center excels in infection prevention, ensuring that patients at the hospital are safeguarded against infections.
